Work

Everything a long project needs.
Nothing it doesn’t.

Plan it on cards.

Index cards on a board, an outliner that never runs out of room, notes, and a story bible that underlines every name it knows.

The board: index cards in three acts, in the Dusk theme

Know your habits.

Readability in English and Spanish, echoes, adverbs and fillers. A screenplay set beside 1,960 films and 141 episodes.

Writer Stats: readability and counts for the novel

Set like a book.

Curly quotes, apostrophes, ellipses, small caps and drop caps, as you type. Backspace gives back what you typed.

Research, beside the words.

Interviews with their waveform, video frame by frame, transcripts with timecodes, and sources with notes, contacts and a log.

And the rest.

Someone walking past?
Look busy.

One shortcut and your page becomes a computer hard at work. Five CRTScreens, each with its own sound. Set one to come up by itself when you step away, and it locks whatever you have protected.

Private

100% offline.
100% yours.

Your writing never leaves your computer. There is nothing to sign up for and nowhere for it to go.

No account. No cloud.

Nothing to sign up for, nothing to sync, nothing sent anywhere. It works on a plane, in a cabin, at the end of the world.

Your files, your folder.

Every project is a file in a folder you choose, saved as you type. Back it up or sync it however you like.

Sealed with a password.

Lock a project and every draft, note, recording and backup is sealed on disk. Only the title stays readable.

Nothing lost.

A copy of each project every day you write, snapshots to compare word by word, and thirty days to undo a delete.

CRTScript doesn’t feel like just another app. It feels like time travel. Back to when the only thing your computer asked of you was: what do you want to say?

First time on a Mac? I sign CRTScript myself rather than through Apple, so macOS asks once. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway.

On Windows, if SmartScreen doesn’t know the app yet, click More info, then Run anyway.

Version 0.1.0

Free, for good

Free to use.
Fuelled by coffee.

Hi, I’m Dan. I make CRTScript on my own, one late night at a time. There’s no subscription and there never will be.

If it helps you write, buy me a coffee. It keeps the updates coming and the next tools on their way, for this tribe of ours.

One coffee: a bug squashed.

Questions

Before you start.

Is it really free?

Yes. No trial, no subscription, no account and no ads. If it earns a place in your work, a coffee keeps it going.

Does it need the internet?

No. Everything works offline, and nothing you write ever leaves your computer.

Where is my writing kept?

In Documents/CRTScript, or any folder you choose. One file per project, saved as you type, with a copy of each day kept for thirty days.

Can I bring my work in, and take it out?

Yes. Word, RTF, OpenDocument, EPUB, PDF, web pages, Markdown and text come in, and so do Final Draft, Fountain, Fade In, Highland and Celtx screenplays. Out go PDF, Word, RTF, EPUB, Fountain, Markdown and plain text.

Is it in Spanish?

Every menu, every panel and the manual are in English and Spanish, and it checks your spelling in both at once. But you don't need a spellchecker anyway :)

Which computers does it run on?

Macs with Apple silicon, and Windows 10 and 11 PCs, both x64 and ARM.
